“For decades, cabaret was one of the few Thai industries offering trans performers stable skilled work.”— PrideShow Editorial Board
Calypso opened in 1988 and now runs at Asiatique The Riverfront with 16 acts performed by more than 50 transgender performers — Bangkok's original and longest-running transgender cabaret.
Its significance is employment as much as entertainment. Cabaret has for decades been one of the few Thai industries offering transgender performers stable, skilled, publicly visible work, at a time when most other sectors offered none. That history is double-edged — visibility concentrated in performance has its own constraints — but the economic reality was real.
Fourth at 76 points. Thirty-eight years of continuous operation makes Calypso one of the longest-standing LGBTQ+ employers in this entire ranking.
